Canada's ambitious carbon neutrality plan

After more than five years of taking office, the Trudeau government has decided to present an ambitious target for reducing greenhouse gas emissions by next April.

According to Environment Minister, Jonathan Wilkinson, the arrival of President Biden in the United States could give Canada greater ambition on the climate target. Current discussions with the Americans suggest that it might be possible to move ahead of what was planned last December since the Biden administration is now acting as a partner with Canada on the file. Asked a few times to specify the GHG emission reduction target that the federal government will set for itself for 2030, Mr. Wilkinson simply repeated that Canada must "do more" and that the Ottawa objective will be determined once the ongoing “consultations” with the provinces are complete. Let's remember that when unveiling its new climate plan last December, the Trudeau government promised a new target for reducing GHG emissions in the order of 32% to 40% by 2030, compared to the year 2005.

To put such an action plan in place, the government announced last December investments of $ 15 billion in various sectors of activity, as well as a significant increase in the carbon tax. Let's hope that all the tools and expertise at our disposal, coupled with the opening of the new American administration, will allow us to set ourselves an ambitious target for the carbon neutrality of our country.
