Financial support for industry Grants for your energy efficiency projects

Are you aware of the numerous financial assistance programs that can help you achieve your energy efficiency projects? Moreover, virtually all forms of energy are eligible for financial assistance in Quebec. In fact, the programs encompass electricity, natural gas and fuel oil, among others.

Where to start.

You must first undergo an energy inspection to find out if your project is eligible for financial assistance. Companies specializing in energy savings often conduct the inspection free of charge. A feasibility study will be conducted if energy saving opportunities are identified. Most financial assistance programs offer grants reaching up to 50% of the study cost, up to a maximum ranging from $5,000 to $25,000 per study.

  1. 1.   ELECTRICITY

Hydro-Québec offers several financial assistance programs tailored to the industrial and commercial industry. Over the years, Hydro-Québec has developed automated tools to assess savings as well as financial support associated with various solutions.

Buildings Program

Catered component

This component includes energy efficiency projects carried out in buildings with a minimum area* of 5,000 m2 with a project generating a minimum of 25,000 kWh of eligible annual electricity savings. A project can still include several buildings belonging to a single client (each building must have a minimum area of 5,000 m2).

Financial assistance ranging from $0.05 to $0.25 per saved kWh

Prescriptive component

This component includes energy efficiency projects carried out in buildings under* of 5,000 m2 with a project generating a minimum of 25,000 kWh of eligible annual electricity savings.

Industrial Systems Program

Retrofit

This component applies to any project that aims to cut electricity consumption by at least 25,000 kWh per year, with a payback period of 1 to 10 years, when costs are recouped solely through eligible electricity savings.

The lesser of:

  • 15¢/kWh saved
  • 50% of total eligible costs
  • Amount required to reduce payback period to 1 year

Prescriptive measures

This component encompasses projects involving lighting, variable-frequency drives, compressed air, water chilling and industrial refrigeration.

The lesser of:

  • 20¢/kWh above market baseline
  • a percentage of eligible standard actual costs

  1. 2.   NATURAL GAS

Like Hydro-Québec, Gaz Métro also offers financial assistance programs tailored to certain sectors. The industrial and commercial industries are grouped. Below are the key programs available:

Industrial Program

Encouragement and implementation of energy efficiency measures

Encourages the implementation of energy efficiency measures that are not covered by other programs toward a more effective use of natural gas.

The lesser of:

  • 25¢/m3 saved
  • $25,000
  • 50% of eligible costs
  • Amount required to reduce payback period to 1 year

Energy efficient renovations

Program aimed at encouraging renovations that will improve the thermal envelope of buildings to make them more energy efficient.

Maximum financial assistance of $100,000 per building

Fresh air intake unit

Up to 25¢/m3 of saved natural gas

Infrared heating unit

Financial assistance up to $500 per unit

  1. 3.   FUEL OIL

Although none of the fuel oil suppliers subsidize energy efficiency projects, government bodies have implemented financial assistance programs to reduce the consumption of fuel oil, an important source of GHG emissions. Key programs are the following:

Assistance program to implement energy efficiency measures in buildings

$10/GJ or up to 75% of eligible costs

Heavy oil consumption reduction program (under revision)

The lesser of:

  • $40 per ton of reduced GHG emissions per year
  • 75 % of total eligible costs

  1. 4.   OTHER INITIATIVES

There are over 60 financial assistance programs in Quebec. A list of current energy efficiency programs is published by the ministère des Ressources naturelles et de la Faune and its partners on the Government of Québec’s energy efficiency website.

Various forms of financial assistance are available as part of these programs. Several organizations are implementing more stringent eligibility criteria. For this reason, we recommend consulting an expert to guide you through the process and help you maximize your savings.
